Department of Electronic Engineering of the Hellenic Mediterranean University (in Chania):

A Department of history in a city with a history

The current Department of Electronic Engineering of the Hellenic Mediterranean University has a long history in the field of technical education in Chania, which began long before 1965.
Since then, the Department has been established in the single field of higher education and has developed significantly, with:
  • its first-year students exceed 140 each year,
  • incoming Erasmus students to exceed 20 each year
  • the Educational Staff to exceed 40 Members (26 faculty members at all academic levels and about 14 young scientists, contract teachers, and scientific / laboratory associates).
Typical stations in the history of the Department
  • 1965: With YA 114871 / Α.379 / 6-9-1965 (Government Gazette) the 3-year postgraduate study recognized by the Ministry of Education Private School of Radioelectricians is renamed to Higher Private School of Electronics “I. Markoulaki “.
  • 1965: On 27-11-1965, Spyridon Ap. Fitrakis enrolled as a 1st student of the Higher Private School of Electronics “I. Markoulaki “.
  • 1968: Georgia Mann. Andrianaki is proclaimed 1st graduate of the Higher Private School of Electronics “I. Markoulaki “. Since then, a total of 420 graduates of the Higher Private School of Electronics “I. Markoulaki “.
  • 1982: With Law 1268/1982 (Government Gazette 87 / t.A / 18-7-1982, article 48) the operation of the Higher Private School of Electronics ceases and the Department of Electronics is established in the Public Higher School of Technological Engineering (ASETEM) of KATEE Heraklion (Chania Branch). In the same year, the Department of Electronics of KATEE Heraklion (Chania Branch) receives the file and the equipment of the Higher Private School of Electronics “I. Markoulaki “.
  • 1982: On 6-9-1982, Konstantinos Nick. Tailor is enrolled as a 1st student (with ID 1) of the Department of Electronics. Since then, the register of students of the Department continues with a single number, having now exceeded 5,500 enrolled.
  • 1983: With the Law 1404/1983 (Government Gazette 173 / t.A / 24-11-1983), which constitutes the founding law of the TEI, the TEI of Heraklion is established with a School of Technological Applications (STEF).
  • 1983: The Electronic Department of the Chania Branch of the STEF of the TEI of Heraklion, which is an evolution of the Electronic Department of the Chania Branch of KATEE Heraklion, is initially housed in the premises of the Higher Private School of Electronics “I. Markoulaki ”in the center of the city of Chania.
  • 1983-1996: The Department of Electronics as a Department of Higher Education, which is suffocating in its original installation space and since 1986 the efforts to find a new space have begun. Thus, in 1992, the construction of the original building of the Department began at the site now located in Halepa (3 Romanou Street), between the Holy Temple of the Annunciation and the 10th Elementary School of Chania, where it was relocated in March 1996.
  • 1987: On 27-2-1987, George Laz. Papageorgiou is declared the 1st graduate of the Department of Electronics, TEI of Heraklion. Since then, the Department of Electronic Engineering of the TEI of Crete has declared a total of more than 1,200 graduates.
  • 1998: With the HA E5 / 1816 / 6-8-1998 (Government Gazette 898 / t.B / 21-8-1998) the operation was approved by the acad. year 1998-99 of the Selection Studies Program (PSE) of Telecommunications & Computer Networks, within the Department of Electronics. The PSE Telecommunications & Computer Networks operated with great success from 1998 to 2005, announcing a total of 41 graduates.
  • 1999: With Presidential Decree 200/1999 (Government Gazette 179 / t.A / 6-9-1999, article 4) the TEI of Heraklion is renamed the TEI of Crete.
  • 1999: Professors of the Department of Electronics managed, with Presidential Decree 200/1999 (Government Gazette 179 / t.A / 6-9-1999, article 1) in the context of the expansion of Higher Education, to create in the TEI of Crete (with the opening of the acad . year 1999-2000) the following 3 new Departments: 1) the Department of Natural Resources Management Systems Technology (now Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Engineering TE) in the Chania Branch, 2) the Department of Music Technology & Acoustics (now Department of Music Technology Engineering & Acoustics TE) in the Rethymnon Branch, and 3) the Department of Applied Information & Multimedia (now Department of Computer Engineering) at the School of Technological Applications in Heraklion.
  • 2001: With Law 2916/2001 (Government Gazette 114 / t.A / 11-6-2001) the TEI now belong to the technological sector of higher education.
  • 2003: With Presidential Decree 247/2003 (Government Gazette 222 / t.A / 17-9-2003, article 4) the Chania Branch becomes an independent School of the TEI of Crete.
  • 2011: The new wing of the School building is completed.
  • 2013: With Presidential Decree 104/2013 (Government Gazette 137 / t.A / 5-6-2013) the Department of Electronics is renamed to the Department of Electronic Engineering TE and is now part of the School of Applied Sciences of the TEI of Crete based in Chania, together with the Department TE of Natural Resources & Environment Engineering (in Chania) and the Department of Music Technology & Acoustics TE (in Rethymnon).
  • 2014: With the Government Gazette 2205 / τ.Β / 12-8-2014, the autonomous Postgraduate Program “Physics of Plasma & Applications – PlaPA” is founded in Chania, with 3 directions (a) Adrenal Maintenance, (b) Physical Laser, and ( c) Plasma Science.
  • 2016: With the Government Gazette 2556 / τ.Β / 19-8-2016, the autonomous Postgraduate Program “Electronic Systems of Telecommunications & Automation – ISTA” is founded in Chania.
  • 2018: With the Government Gazette 1973 / t.B / 1-6-2018, the autonomous PMS “Lasers, Plasma & Applications – LaPlA” is re-established in Chania.
  • 2018: With the Government Gazette 1973 / t.B / 1-6-2018, the Department of Electronic Engineers participates in the establishment of the joint Postgraduate Program of Postgraduate Studies “Nanotechnology for Energy Applications”.
  • 2018: With the Government Gazette 2068 / t.B / 7-6-2018, the autonomous PMS “Electronic Telecommunications & Automation Systems – ISTA” is re-established in Chania.
  • 2019: With article 23 of Law 4610/2019 (Government Gazette 70 / t.A / 7-5-2019) the TEI of Crete is abolished and is included in the newly established Greek Mediterranean University.
  • 2019: With articles 24-25 of Law 4610/2019 (Government Gazette 70 / t.A / 7-5-2019) the School of Applied Sciences of the TEI of Crete (based in Chania) is abolished, as the School of Engineering is established (with headquarters in Heraklion) and the School of Music & Audiovisual Technologies (based in Rethymnon).
  • 2019: With article 25 of Law 4610/2019 (Government Gazette 70 / t.A / 7-5-2019), the corresponding Department of Electronic Engineering, which is part of the School, is established in Chania, in the position of the Department of Electronic Engineering TE Engineering of Heraklion.
  • 2019: With articles 24-25 and 28-31 of Law 4610/2019 (Government Gazette 70 / t.A / 7-5-2019), closes the Department of Natural Resources & Environment Engineering TE of Chania, whose students, The faculty members, the members of EDIP-ETEP, and the rest of the staff are included in other Departments of the Hellenic Mediterranean University, while the equipment, the laboratories and the infrastructures are transferred to the new Institution.
  • 2019: With article 25 of Law 4610/2019 (Government Gazette 70 / τ.Α / 7-5-2019), the Department of Music Technology & Acoustics is established in Rethymno, in the position of the Department of Music Technology & Acoustics TE, which is part of the new School of Music & Audiovisual Technologies of Rethymnon.
  • 2019: With article 25 of Law 4610/2019 (Government Gazette 70 / t.A / 7-5-2019), the new Department of Chemical Engineering is established in Chania, which if and when it operates will be included in the School of Engineering of Heraklion.
  • 2019: With a decision of the Senate of HMU, the students of the former Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Engineering of TE are included in the Department of Electronic Engineering, which as a Department will take care of their graduation.
  • 2019: By decision of the Senate of HMU, 7 of the total of 12 faculty members, along with 2 members of ETEP and 2 members of the Board of Directors of the former Department of Natural Resources & Environment Engineering of TE, are included in the Department of Electronic Engineering.
  • 2019: With 104090 / Ζ1 / 27-6-2019 Decision of the Ministers of Education, Research & Religions and Finance (Government Gazette 2657 / τ.Β / 7-7-2019) the duration of the program is set at 10 academic semesters (5 years) studies at the Department of Electronic Engineering of HMU.
  • 2019: By decision of the Senate of HMU, the Department of Electronic Engineering organizes independent doctoral studies in Chania.
