Subject – Purpose
The MSc «Lasers, Plasma & Applications» promotes scientific knowledge and research, providing high-level specialized knowledge to its students, in line with the research and development needs of the country as well as the European and international academic and professional environment.
More specifically, the aim of the MSc is to offer its students high-level postgraduate education on topics related to the applications and technology of lasers and plasma, which in recent years have shown continuous rapid scientific and technological development at an international level. The education of new scientists in this internationally significant field will enable the country to continue to actively participate, with specialized scientific personnel, in international developments concerning the corresponding innovative technologies and cutting-edge knowledge.
Objectives
The objectives of the MSc «Lasers, Plasma & Applications» are:
- to educate and prepare its students so that, upon graduation, they are ready to enter the third cycle of studies, i.e. to pursue a doctoral thesis at the Hellenic Mediterranean University or at other Higher Education Institutions in Greece or abroad,
- to staff academic education and research bodies (Higher Education Institutions, Research Centers) in the country with specialized scientific personnel in this important field of knowledge,
- to staff the Institute of Plasma Physics & Lasers of the Hellenic Mediterranean University with specialized scientific personnel,
- to give students and graduates the opportunity to significantly broaden their horizons by acquiring new knowledge, enhancing their competitiveness in the European and international job market, through the mobility offered by the MSc «Lasers, Plasma & Applications» with leading universities, research centers and companies abroad,
- to strengthen the skills and knowledge of its graduates so that they can independently, or in cooperation with other scientists, create new small and medium-sized high-technology and knowledge-based companies — with research and development departments in their organizational structure — for the design, implementation and provision of competitive high-technology, high-quality products and knowledge services. The MSc applies a quality assurance policy in all areas of its operation in accordance with the regulations of HAHE.
Duration
The LaPlA MSc is offered as full-time, or part-time up to twice the duration of full-time studies, in accordance with Article 33 of Law 4485/2017, as in force.
The minimum duration for the award of the Master’s Degree of Specialization is three (3) semesters of study, the third of which is dedicated to the preparation of the master’s thesis.
Tuition Fees
There are no tuition fees for students of the MSc “Lasers, Plasma & Applications”.
Location
The program is implemented at the facilities of the Institute of Plasma Physics & Lasers, of the University Center for Research & Innovation (PA.K.E.K.) of HMU, in Rethymno.
Scholarships
During the 3rd semester of studies, MSc students are encouraged to submit an application for a scholarship and enrollment in the third cycle of studies for the preparation of a doctoral thesis.
Course Program
Full-time postgraduate students must successfully attend ten (10) compulsory courses in the first two (2) semesters of study. Part-time postgraduate students must successfully attend ten (10) compulsory courses within four (4) semesters of study.
The master’s thesis for full-time students is carried out in the third semester of study. For part-time students, the master’s thesis may last up to one year.
Each postgraduate student is required to attend and successfully pass courses corresponding to thirty (30) credit units (ECTS) per semester of study. Each course corresponds to six (6) credit units. Students must also prepare and write a master’s thesis, which corresponds to thirty (30) credit units.
Ninety (90) ECTS units are required for the award of the Master’s Degree of Specialization.
The language of instruction is Greek.

MSc students will have the (optional) opportunity to apply for mobility to partner Institutions in Europe at research and education level, either for the preparation of their thesis or for attending courses. Mobility is supported by the Erasmus program.
