Abstract
This study investigates the interaction of a high-power continuous-wave (CW) fiber laser with aluminum alloy 1050 (Al 1050) in CW laser machining. A custom experimental setup was developed, integrating a 2 kW TRUMPF fiber laser with a 3-axis CNC milling machine and a Precitec LightCutter head. Finite element method (FEM) simulations were performed in parallel from A. Gosta whose M.Sc. Thesis was performed in collaboration with S. Kamposos. The thermal and mechanical responses during laser irradiation are herein studied and analyzed by experiments. Key process parameters, including focal spot size, standoff and focal distance, laser power, and scanning speed, were optimized for inducing plastic deformations, melting, engraving, and cutting. Real-time temperature mapping was achieved using high-speed infrared thermography and embedded thermocouples, and for post-process surface characterization optical microscopy and interferometry were used. The experimental results are compared and agree well with the numerical simulations results and further experimental capabilities of the developed CW laser machining set-up are explored and demonstrated.
